

I donate my time, talents, and treasure to SHP so that children can feel safe in school, to enable them to be educated, competent adults. Are we truly aware of how many mass shootings there are, and do we understand the true impact? It’s absurd how many mass shootings there are in this country many of which receive only “local” news coverage.

Mass shootings in schools, churches, grocery stores, movie theaters, parks and countless other places are robbing us of our precious loved ones and security. Constitutional rights are important, yet when they’re causing carnage everywhere we go, it’s time to reign in those rights. SHP (Sandy Hook Promise) is working restlessly to stop gun violence in U.S. Even if we can take one step as a nation to control this madness it might just lead to another and… I would urge you to take a look at the variety of ways that you could become involved and support Sandy Hook Promise that we can stop the madness and move back to a safer place to live and pass along. We do not live in a country where any meaningful segment of society thinks that mass shootings in schools, stores and malls, places of worship, social gatherings and other public events are an acceptable occurrence. Let’s hope that holds after the gun lobbies exert their pressure on the senators. Senator Cornyn of Texas said this last week that they had the 60 votes to pass some legislation. We have failed to pass along the promise of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness to our children’s generation who have to live with concern that their children will be safe as we have done worse with our grandchildren’s generation who can compare one gun safety gathering to another. I am a baby boomer who was born in the late 1940’s into an America described be one positive and superlative adjective after another. My second thought was to apologize to them which I decided was improper. My first reaction was shock that these young people had a frame of reference to be able to compare like events.

They were comparing this event to others they had attended.

While my wife and I were walking back to our car after Saturday’s March for Our Lives we were behind four young people who probably were not yet high school aged. While the politicization of gun violence can feel daunting and demoralizing for teachers, I know I’m supported and can be part of the solution as a member of Sandy Hook Promise. I am more motivated than ever before to take up this cause. Once again, Sandy Hook Promise has provided outlets for me to channel my energies and resources in a truly meaningful and effective way. Since the birth of first child last year, my drive for this work has taken on even more meaning in my life. At a times when I have felt helpless to make change as an individual, being a part of Sandy Hook Promise has equipped me and my students with ways to effect change in the ways that matter most in the places that matter most: actual schools. That’s why I joined Sandy Hook Promise as a sponsor for their Say Something program. Perhaps more importantly, I know the impact on students the emotional and academic toll it takes.
